Role
Spent 8 hours with the IT team at WVU Medicine learning about healthcare data systems and receiving training in Tableau for data visualization and analytics.
Goal
The goal was to clean and analyze operating room data within WVU Medicine hospitals, then visualize key insights, develop conclusions, and present our findings and recommendations.
Challenge
Working in a group of three, we had two hours to review the data brief and tech stack, clean and organize the data, and develop conclusions using multiple data visualizations.
Results
We standardized inconsistent scheduling and department data to improve accuracy across the dataset and make the visualizations more reliable.
Through our analysis, we found that Fridays had the highest number of operating room bookings but lower overall usage efficiency, while orthopedic procedures showed a high rate of cancellations.
Results
Developed an understanding of hospitals from a business and operational perspective, including efficiency, scheduling, resource utilization.
Developed an understanding of healthcare data systems, operating room analytics, and how data visualization can support hospital efficiency and decision-making.
Discovered which departments are the most efficient.
Won first place for data visualizations.
